Gardening in Edinburgh

What You Need To Know About Gardening In Edinburgh

Edinburgh gardens run from tight tenement back greens to the big hedged plots of Barnton and Morningside, and most of them share the same problem: plenty worth keeping, and not enough hours to keep it. Our gardening service exists for exactly that.

The work rides the rounds we already run through the city’s south and west: hedges trimmed and shaped, borders weeded and planted, shrubs pruned at the right point in the year, and the growth cleared away when we go.

Start with a free assessment. We walk the garden, agree what regular care should cover, and put the price in writing. One-off tidy-ups are as welcome as regular visits, and there is no contract either way.

What’s Included

Everything Your Garden Needs

Build the visits around what your garden actually needs. Some customers add gardening to their lawn round; others book a one-off tidy-up first. Priced after a quick look, no contract either way.

  • Hedge Trimming & Shaping

Hedges cut, shaped and kept in line, from a single garden hedge to full boundary runs, with the clippings cleared when we go.

  • Tree & Shrub Pruning

Pruning at the right time for the plant: shape kept, dead wood out, and growth encouraged where you want it.

  • Garden Tidy-Ups

One-off clear-ups and seasonal tidies that bring an overgrown garden back under control, ready for regular care.

  • Planting & Beds

Borders planted, beds refreshed and kept weeded, with plants matched to the spot they are going into.

  • Weeding

Beds, borders, paths and drives kept clear of weeds through the season, little and often rather than in one battle.

  • Fencing, Patios & Paths

Fence runs repaired or replaced, with patios and paths laid as part of our landscaping work.

Gardening advice

Davie’s Advice before you spend a penny

What Davie tells every customer, whether they book us or not. Free to ignore, but he’s usually right.

  1. Cut hedges after the birds are done.

Nesting season runs March to August. Check before you cut, or save the big cuts for late summer.

  2. Prune at the right time, not the tidy time.

Spring flowerers get cut after they flower, summer ones in late winter. Timing beats enthusiasm.

  3. Weed little and often.

Ten minutes a fortnight beats a lost weekend in June. Or let us do the ten minutes.

  4. Mulch your borders.

A good mulch in spring feeds the soil, holds water and smothers half the weeding before it starts.

  5. Right plant, right place.

A sun-lover in deep shade will sulk no matter what you feed it. Match the plant to the spot.

  6. Little cuts keep a hedge dense.

Trim light and regular and the hedge thickens. Let it stretch and you end up cutting into bare wood.

Got a question these don't cover? Ask Davie. He answers everything himself.

Gardening in Edinburgh: the local detail

What Matters Here for Gardening in Edinburgh

    The gardens

Edinburgh packs every kind of garden into a few miles: mature hedged plots in Barnton and Colinton, family gardens in Fairmilehead and Liberton, and sheltered back greens closer in. Different spaces, same need for regular hands.

    The hedges

This is hedge country: privet and beech along the villa streets, leylandii where someone wanted privacy in a hurry. Kept lightly trimmed they stay dense and neat; left to stretch, they get expensive. Little and often wins.

    The approach

Gardening visits ride the same fortnightly rounds as our Edinburgh lawn work, so the hedge, the borders and the lawn can be handled in one visit by the same crew. One-off tidy-ups reset a garden that has got away; the round keeps it there.

    The round

Our Edinburgh rounds run every two weeks, usually Monday to Wednesday, through the south and west of the city. Assessments are free, prices are agreed in writing, and there is no contract to sign.
