Nesting season runs March to August. Check before you cut, or save the big cuts for late summer.
Prune at the right time, not the tidy time.
Spring flowerers get cut after they flower, summer ones in late winter. Timing beats enthusiasm.

Mulch your borders.
A good mulch in spring feeds the soil, holds water and smothers half the weeding before it starts.

The gardens

The hedges
Out here hedges do real work: marking boundaries, breaking wind off the fields and holding privacy on the newer estates. Beech, privet and leylandii all respond to the same rule: light, regular cuts keep them dense and manageable.
The approach
We treat gardening as part of the round, not a separate trade. The crew that cuts the lawn can trim the hedge, weed the borders and prune the shrubs in the same visit, and the green waste leaves with us.
